Gaining an Insight into Engineering

Last week, Darchem Engineering welcomed Skye, a Year 10 student, to the business for work experience with our Design Engineering team.

During her time with us, Skye had the opportunity to gain an insight into different areas of the company and learn more about the processes involved in engineering and manufacturing. Throughout the week, she visited the shop floor, explored different departments, and saw first-hand how teams across the business work together to deliver projects.

Hands-On Experience with Design Software

As part of her work experience, Skye also spent time using design software to create models, including a space shuttle model, giving her a practical introduction to the creative and technical side of Design Engineering.

Speaking about what interested her in engineering, Skye said:

“I was interested in how specific models are being made and the steps that you have to follow to lead to the final product.”

Discovering Opportunities Within Engineering

One of the highlights of the week for Skye was learning more about the wide range of careers available within engineering and manufacturing.

“I was surprised with how many jobs there are within an engineering company. I was surprised how everyone works in a team and not just individually.”

Skye also explained that one of her favourite parts of the experience was discovering the variety of products manufactured across the business and seeing how ideas develop from concept through to production.

“My favourite part was discovering the different products that are made.”

Inspiring Future Engineers

The experience has encouraged Skye to consider a future career in engineering, particularly within design, where she feels her interest in creativity and problem solving could be a strong fit.

“Yes, I would like a career in engineering because I like how the job comes with problem solving.”
